We spent all of last night processing our feelings about the casting of the next Doctor Who and we’ve come to the decision that we’re pretty freaking excited about it. Star of The Thick of It and In The Loop, Peter Capaldi was announced as the next inhabitant of the TARDIS, taking over from the floppy-haired hero of time and space, Matt Smith.
Announced on Sunday in an interview with Zoe Ball, Capaldi said of his casting, “Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”
The 55-year-old is no stranger to the Whoniverse though; Capaldi played Caecilius in the Fires of Pompeii episode of the show as well as starring in the phenomenal mini-series Torchwood: Children of Earth. We’ve all got some time to adjust to our new Time Lord as Capaldi won’t take over the role until Christmas but, in the meantime, we can watch clips of him playing the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker from The Thick of It and imagine what it would be like to hear the Doctor swear.
