Baby Dyke Meaning

  • We’ve all been there. When you’re newly out of the closet and don’t even know what your rising sign is yet. You are what we in the (lesbian) biz call a “baby dyke.” Baby dykes might be inexperienced, but they are also wide-eyed and adorable and not yet ruined by years of online dating. And what they lack in experience they more than make up for with enthusiasm.

A baby dyke is a lesbian who is fresh out of the closet. They’re wild, (usually) young, and free — but too scared to have sex rn.

    How old are baby dykes?

According to Urban Dictionary, a baby dyke is usually a “young” lesbian, since lot of people come out when they’re in their teens and 20s. But the term can also apply to a late-in-life lesbian, or someone who comes out in their 30s, 40s, 50s, etc.. You can still technically be a “baby dyke” if you’re new to the lesbian/dyke lifestyle. Welcome! It’s much, much better here.

Baby dykes are still in the process of learning the lingo: butches, femmes, tops, bottoms. Not only that, they’re still figuring out how they want to wear their hair. In a bi bob? Maybe pansexual bangs? Polyamorous layers?? They’re still deciding whether or not they’re a purse or tote bag lesbian. (We all settle into the tote bag life eventually.)

If you’re a baby dyke reading this, know that all this awkwardness is just a phase — you’ll feel like an old seasoned dyke in no time. If you’re interacting with a baby dyke: be kind! Approach them like a little cub. There’s no need to ruin their day because you’re bitter after decades of swiping left. And if you’re in a relationship with one: be gentle! Their first heartbreak will haunt them. Don’t make it too traumatizing.
