Celebrity quotes about being bisexual

It’s so refreshing to see more celebrities coming out as bisexual and actually talking about it like it’s not some sort of taboo. We’ve even highlighted 15 openly bisexual celebrities on the HER blog before.

You might see them in this list too!

Lauren Jauregui on the binary and bisexual pride

  1. “The thing that gets me is that nobody seems to understand that bisexuality is not binary. It’s not just gay or straight. It’s a spectrum, and it’s okay to exist anywhere in that spectrum.” – Lauren Jauregui

This quote from music artist Lauren Jauregui highlights the idea that bisexuality is not simply a black-and-white issue. Bisexuality exists on a spectrum, and it is important to understand and respect the diverse experiences of bisexuals.

  1. “You can’t use the fact that I’m bisexual against me if that’s something I’m proud of.” – Lauren Jauregui

The bisexual icon Lauren Jauregui is back at it again with a hard-hitting truth: when you own your identity, it’s very hard for it to be used as a weapon against you.

Lady Gaga on being born this way

  1. “It’s not a lie that I am bisexual, and I like women… This is who I am and who I have always been.” – Lady Gaga said in 2013 at an Artpop release party.

Lady Gaga’s is clear that bisexuality is an inherent aspect of a person’s identity. Being bisexual is simply a natural part of who she is, and it is not something that can be disregarded.

Bisexuality is “not that complicated” for Evan Rachel Wood

  1. “I’m not gay. I’m not straight. I’m just bisexual. It’s not that complicated.” – Evan Rachel Wood

It’s not uncommon for bisexual people to come across people who are ignorant about the basic fact that bisexuality means attraction to more than one gender or all genders. Evan Rachel Wood explains that bisexuality is a simple and straightforward aspect of a person’s identity.

Stephanie Beatriz on explaining bisexuality

  1. “Bisexuality often needs an explanation. It isn’t something you can often ‘read’ on a person, and because of that bi people sometimes feel like an invisible part of the LGBTQIA community.” – Stephanie Beatriz

The quote is, well … self-explanatory! We’ll add that Stephanie Beatriz came out around the same time her character, Rosa, came out on the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and we loved to see it.

Anna Paquin on being with a partner of a specific gender

  1. “If you were to break up with them or if they were to die, it doesn’t prevent your sexuality from existing. It doesn’t really work like that.” – Anna Paquin to Larry King

The True Blood star got real about her sexuality with talk show host Larry King, who suggested that she was now straight because she was married.

  1. “There’s [sic] people that think that monogamy and bisexuality are mutually exclusive…[that’s] their problem, not mine.” – Anna Paquin for HuffPost Live

On another occasion for Huffington Post, Anna Paquin spoke more about bisexual stigma. She explains here that Just because you are bisexual doesn’t mean you have to be non-monogamous and date all genders at once. It’s quite simple: bisexuality is a whole identity on its own, regardless of who you’re committed to at the moment.

Bjork refuses to choose

  1. “Personally, I think choosing between men and women is like choosing between cake and ice cream. You’d be daft not to try both when there are so many different flavors.” – Bjork in a 2004 interview with Diva magazine

Ah, the good ol’ apples and oranges allegory. Comparing genders – or people regardless of gender – can oftentimes feel like a useless errand for bisexuals. Simply put, a lot of bisexuals don’t care!  Love is love, after all, right?

Frank Ocean’s vulnerable coming-out letter

Speaking of bisexual singers, I still remember reading Frank Ocean’s coming-out letter from 2012 like it was yesterday. He was one of the first people in hip-hop to come out on his own terms, even before Tyler the Creator. Here’s one of my favorite lines from his coming out letter that encapsulates the feeling of not having a choice about your identity or feelings:

  1. “There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling, no choice. It was my first love, it changed my life.”

Ah, first love — particularly first gay love — It’s a wondrous adventure, and it can really feel like a whole new world opens up to you. There comes the point where there’s no fighting it and resigning to the beautiful truth of your sexuality, with no shame holding you back. Fans to this day are grateful for Ocean’s vulnerability and praise him for the bicon he is.

Let’s shout out another iconic quote of Frank’s, this time from his 2016 song, Chanel

  1. “I see both sides like Chanel.” – Frank Ocean

This is a perfect bisexual quote for Instagram bios or captions if you want to go for that cool, aloof bisexual vibe who totally has the best taste in music (duh).

But in all seriousness, bisexuals can think of this quote in a few ways. Firstly, “both sides” is often a metaphor for both men and women (though we know now that there are more than just two genders). The line also references the Chanel logo, which has two mirroring and overlapping Cs, and it also may reference Coco Chanel’s own bisexuality. Frank Ocean himself has not confirmed or denied the lyrics’ meaning, but that goes perfectly with that cool, aloof, bisexual vibe we’re going for anyway.

More bisexual wordplay from Jason Mraz

There’s nothing the LGBT+ community loves more than a good pun. Jason Mraz, another master songwriter, came out with a love poem to the LGBT+ community in 2018.

  1. You stood up for the world.
And now the world is better because of you.
We still have a long way to go
    But know
    I am bi your side.
    All ways.

Funny bisexual quotes from the internet

The previous bisexual quotes from celebrities really tug at your heartstrings, huh? What better way to offset that than with funny quotes from some of the greatest internet — excuse my French — shitposters. If you’re looking for short quotes on bisexuality to put on your Instagram bio, these are perfect for that.

If you penned any of the following hilarious quotes, please let us know so we can properly credit you.

Here are some gems from Reddit:

  1. “I’m bisexual, which means you’re all at risk.”
  2. “The moon has phases. Bisexuality does not.”
  3. “God said, ‘Adam and Eve. So I did both’”
  4. “I have BDE, bisexual disaster energy.”
  5. “Puns are very sacred to us because they can be taken both ways.”

Here are some more phrases that have chaotic bi vibes:

  1. “Bisexual fisherman? call that queerbaiting”
  2. “so, you love, respect and are obsessed with andrew garfield? you wouldn’t happen to be bisexual, would you?”
  3. I’m not like other girls. I like other girls.
  4. “It is my God given bisexual right to be dramatic.”
  5. “quick i need $10,000 because i have Adhd and am bisexual”
  1. ‘“this character is not canonically bisexual” to YOU. i know them personally’
  2. “Bi people take so long in the bathroom because they’re all tucking their shirts back in”
  3. “Bisexual and still not into you”
  4. “I call myself bisexual because I think hot people are hot.”

And of course, the classic bi slogans:

  1. “Our identity is not your fetish.”
  2. “I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you are bi enough!”

Let’s get historical: bisexuality throughout the years

Bisexuality has been around since the dawn of time, so let’s throw it back several decades to see how far we’ve come:

  1. “I am bisexual because I am drawn to particular people regardless of gender. It doesn’t make me wishy-washy, confused, untrustworthy or more sexually liberated. It makes me bisexual.” – Bisexual activist Lani Ka’ahumanu in 1987

It’s so refreshing to see bisexuality standing strong since the 80s! Lani Ka’ahumanu has been a bisexual activist since 1980 and penned this quote in the historic article “The Bisexual Movement: Are We Visible Yet?” which was the first article in any major US national lesbian or gay publication to address biphobia

Another historical piece full of beautiful bi quotes is the Bisexual Manifesto, which was originally published in 1990 in the magazine Anything That Moves: Beyond the Myths of Bisexuality. The title is self-explanatory: the manifesto is written on behalf of the Bay Area Bisexual Network, an activist group of bisexuals who seek to do away with biphobia. Here are some quotes from the manifesto that still stand today:

  1. “Bisexuality is a whole, fluid identity.” – The Bisexual Manifesto (1990)
  2. “Do not assume that bisexuality is binary…in nature; that we must have ‘two’ sides or that we MUST be involved simultaneously with both genders to be fulfilled human beings. In fact, don’t assume that there are only two genders.” – The Bisexual Manifesto (1990)
  3. “Do not mistake our fluidity for confusion, irresponsibility, or an inability to commit. Do not equate promiscuity, infidelity, or unsafe sexual behavior with bisexuality. Those are human traits that cross ALL sexual orientations. Nothing should be assumed about anyone’s sexuality—including your own.”  – The Bisexual Manifesto (1990)

Probably my favorite quote from the Manifesto, and one that will probably fit the character limit on your social media bios:

  1. “There are as many definitions of bisexuality as there are bisexuals.” – The Bisexual Manifesto (1990)

The full transcript of the Bisexual Manifesto is available online, even if the magazine Anything That Moves is no longer running.

From the 1980s to the 2010s, here’s another current bisexual activist who addresses the biphobic stereotype that bisexuality is just a halfway house to full-on straight or gay.

  1. “The reason people think bi women are ‘just experimenting’ and bi men are ‘actually gay’ is because patriarchy has manipulated us into thinking everyone must be attracted to men.” – Jen Winston

Jen Winston has a lot to say about biphobia and even wrote a 2021 memoir called Greedy: Notes on a Bisexual Who Wants Too Much that tackles the real core of the problem: (shocker!) the patriarchy.

As sad as it is to think that bisexuals have been fighting against biphobia for literal decades and longer, it’s also heartwarming to know that the community stays strong in light of ignorance and bigotry against bisexuals. This is why defining biphobia and outlining what to do about it to allies is so important, so we don’t have to stand alone in this fight for respect and equality.

Bisexual pride shines in many colors, as you can see across these 33 quotes on bisexuality that range from heartwarming and heart-tugging to punny and cute.

These iconic bisexual quotes from celebrities, the internet, and the archives serve as a reminder of the diversity and complexity of bisexuality, so whether you want to use it for your next social media post or shiny new bio, remember that as bi folks: we’re here, we’re queer, and we’re not going anywhere.
