More than half of Gen Z and Millenial daters are ditching mainstream dating apps, with over 75% preferring community and identity-driven apps like HER due to its vibrant sapphic community and lack of CIS men
HER, the bold sapphic dating app, is excited to share the results of its recent Sapphic Renaissance survey. HER recently surveyed its users on their dating app preferences and learned that niche, identity-driven apps like HER are having their moment. HER recently saw a significant spike in user growth and wanted to learn more about these new users. Coincidentally, in recent months, sapphic culture has not just infiltrated the zeitgeist, it’s saturated it. Between the meteoric rise of singer Chappell Roan, Billie Illish embracing her queer identity, and movies like Bottoms and Love Lies Bleeding — the sapphic lifestyle is dominating pop culture.
“We definitely feel like we are in the eye of Sapphic Renaissance storm as the core of this moment is really centered around Sapphic dating and love,” said Robyn Exton, Founder and CEO of HER. “HER’s features are centered around creating thoughtful experiences and genuine connection. It’s not surprising to us at all that sapphics and sapphic-curious people are flocking to the app for a safe, sapphic-centered dating app experience.”
The Sapphic Renaissance Survey
What do sapphic daters want
According to our survey data, the number one motivator for daters to try HER is a preference for sapphic dating, with a safe sapphic environment ranking second. Interestingly enough, Millenials actually ranked HER as having a safe sapphic environment over their preference for dating sapphics, while Gen Z trended with the larger data set and ranked their one motivator for trying HER as a preference for dating sapphics.
The lack of CIS men on the app ranked third among motivators for all age groups. Coincidentally, CIS men were the number one reason all surveyed sapphics were leaving mainstream dating apps, with a lack of genuine connections ranking as the second highest reason for departing.
Niche apps are, in fact, having a moment
While most of our users who participated in our survey use mainstream dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, 52% have been using them less lately. Broken down by age group, 49% of Gen Z users are using the big apps less, with slightly more (53%) of millennials showing less interest in them. A staggering 75.2% of survey respondents stated they prefer identity/community-driven dating apps over mainstream ones.
“HER has kickstarted my sapphic dating journey by providing me with a very inclusive space where I—a demipansexual demiwomxn—have felt not only safe but also encouraged to be my authentic self. My experience with HER has been quite fun, thanks in large part to features like profile stickers, interest tags, and great prompts for short essay responses. I was delighted to be able to write so much in my bio, too! Features like this empowered me to express who I am loudly and proudly! I would absolutely say that these features helped me to find my current girlfriend, and I have even gone so far as to recommend the app to sapphic co-workers.” – Rae, 30, Denver metro area, Colorado (they/she).
The Femininomenon is real
28% of our users surveyed shared they were inspired to try sapphic dating by the cultural moment we are currently in, with 37.5% of respondents sharing they had never dated sapphics before joining HER. 53% of daters surveyed said they have been using HER more lately, with 83% sharing they have used HER in the month.
