Goodbye: Dattch
Hello: HER
In 2013 when the idea for Dattch came about, we wanted a name that would come to mean something new. There were a few too many SapphoKisses and GurlActions out there for our liking and we wanted to find a word that could represent the queer community we saw and experienced everyday.
Dattch came from a snazzy combo of ‘Date’ and ‘Catch’. It was simple, it sounded pretty sharp and we could get the .com. Job done. Except from the day we launched Dattch no one could bloody spell it, and pretty much no one could say it. And, of course, there was also the “Does it mean xxx?”. In the past month alone I’ve heard:
Daatch, Dyke, Datach, Ditch, Datch, Butch, Snatch, Dutch, Daattch, Catch Snatch, Dyke Catch, Date Snatch, Dykey-Butchy-Snatch
You’re a creative bunch, I’ll give you that.
And as much as we all love Dykey-Butchy-Snatch, literally, it didn’t really represent the business we’ve become and the whole community that we are home to.
So we started thinking about where this could go. If we were to have a new name, what would it be and how could it represent what we stand for.
We spent months brainstorming, testing, and ultimately choosing our new name.
Needless to say it wasn’t an easy (or a light) decision. But it’s one we’re crazy excited about.
HER.
It’s simple and it’s what we’re all here for.
I am Her.
You are Her.
We are Her.
We know it’s a big change. But we haven’t done this without you in mind. Her represents what we believe in. Creating products for Her, for Us. Because we are all Her. I was Her the first night I kissed a girl, we were Her when we came out to our parents, you were Her when you fell in love with a woman for the first time, we were Her when we started creating an app to connect this whole community. I am Her. You are Her. We are all, Her.
But this is more than a name change – it’s an entire business change. There was a lot we needed to fix with the app and it felt right to bring the two together as a chance to show you what we’re here to do and what we stand for.
Our old app has been great: a great learning platform, a great way to start building our community, a great way to start helping women meet each other. And we’ve had some incredible stories of romance, friendship, crawling out of the closet, or dancing right out that closet with feathers and glitter and confetti cannons. But there’s still been a lot missing from our app. You were looking for so much more. How we exist as a community goes beyond just dating. We’re looking for friends, allies, events, news stories, role models and an easy way to get all our lezzie info in one simple place. So that’s the experience we want to end up building for you with Her.
But Rome wasn’t built in a day. You’re going to see us growing a lot over the next year. You’ll see the experience get better and better as we learn what works and what doesn’t, and as we create the best female community we can.
To get here we’ve literally spent months talking with you all to understand what was working, what was missing, what was really awkies and what was really aces. We’ve asked you in surveys, we’ve met you for testing, we sent you questions in-app, we got way too drunk together after a brainstorm or two. All because we want to build the app that is going to work best for you. You are Her. You make us who we are, so what you tell us, counts.
Okay, so here’s what’s changed:
Meet – see each profile, one at a time. Check out her profile board & say what you like on it. If she’s liked something about yours too, we’ll let you know, you’ll probably have a bunch to chat about.
Feed – a source of info for what’s going on in your local community. Content, events, what people are up to. Yes, it’s kind of like Lesbian Facebook.
No more grid – You can see everyone in the Meet section, and you can see what everyone is up to in Feed, so you don’t really need to see everyone again in the grid. Please don’t freak, you still get to meet all the girls.
New colours and logo ’n stuff – we changed our name and brand so it’s going to feel a bit different from the inside as well. It’s still us but with a jazzy new outfit. We hope you like it.
We have launched HER on iPhone for now and Android will be coming really soon!
We’re really sorry that Android’s not here for Day 1 but we’ll be coming back to you shortly. We love you, please forgive us… And you can keep using Dattch in the meantime!
Launching Her sees the start of a whole new era for us. As a team, as an app and as a community. If you want to be a part of that, become a part of what we’re trying to build, whether that’s through testing, feedback, comments or helping us launch across the world! Do get in touch. We are Her just as much as you are Her and we want you to be a part of what this year is going to bring.
