    Pro-Choice

Being Pro-Choice means respecting and supporting a person’s autonomy and freedom to choose what is best for their own body, health, or life. Generally, when folks say pro-choice, they’re supporting a person’s right to have an abortion. In June 2022, Roe v. Wade was overturned. This 1973 Supreme Court decision established the right to legal and safe abortions. We are no longer guaranteed this safe access to our medical freedom. Being Pro-Choice supports folks’ health, safety, and autonomy. It also supports equality and backs up the idea that individuals should be free to choose what is best for them without facing added health risks, the threat of jail time or arrest (for them or their doctors!), or other barriers to their safety or well-being.

    Unban Books

Books are knowledge, and knowledge is power. Across the US, book ban reports are at an all-time high. Unfortunately, the books that are targeted are often just stories about the queer experience or that have a gay character in them. It is so important for students to have a world of knowledge and resources at their fingertips to navigate the world better, learn the value of diversity, and know that they are not alone. Read a banned book today. Might we recommend Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe or All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson?

    Trans Rights

In 2024, we wish that this didn’t have to be spelled out for folks, but here we are — TRANS FOLKS MATTER, AND THEY DESERVE RIGHTS. We’re a month into 2024, and already over 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced, and they are especially targeting trans people. These include bathroom bans, the right to compete in sports, and the right for trans folks to have access to healthcare. The T in LGBTQ+ is not a silent one, and trans rights are crucial. Period.

    Eat The Rich

Originating from a satirical remark in the 19th century, “Eat the Rich” is a famous phrase that draws attention to economic inequality. It suggests the idea of wealth redistribution. Today, people use this phrase to criticize the disproportionate wealth held by the super-rich and call for a fairer distribution of resources. It’s a reminder that wealth should be shared for the betterment of society, not hoarded by a select few.

    Black Lives Matter (BLM)

Black Lives Matter, also known as BLM, is a movement that emerged in response to racial injustices, particularly police brutality against Black people. #BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 by organizers Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman. BLM is about acknowledging and addressing systemic racism and state-waged violence. BLM calls for equity, justice, and the amplification of Black voices. It is “an affirmation & embrace of the resistance & resilience of Black people.”

    No SWERFs

Sex Worker Exclusionary Radical Feminists (SWERFs) believe in feminist ideals but exclude sex workers from their advocacy. However, sex work is work, and sex workers deserve rights, respect, and safety like anyone else. Saying “No SWERFs” means rejecting this exclusion and recognizing the importance of supporting sex workers’ rights. Let’s promote empathy towards sex workers and uplift all women, including those in the sex industry, because every person’s work deserves dignity and protection. Let’s work towards a world where everyone is treated with kindness and empathy, regardless of their profession.
