President Barack Obama Signs Order To Ban Anti-Gay Workplace Discrimination

Jul 21, 2014

  • Today, President Barack Obama signed an executive order to ban workplace discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.  It’s still shocking that this is an issue that needs to be addressed in 2014 but how wonderful to have a President so interested in supporting LGBTQ rights.
In a ceremony in the East Room of the White House, President Obama signed the order to ban the kind of discrimination that has cost so many Americans their jobs.  The order, to the joy of basically everyone, will also not include exemptions for new religiously-affiliated federal contractors, however existing contractors will be able to work under the previous rules but these will not be expanded upon.

Congress have been dragging their heels in approving the Employment Non-Discrimination Act thanks to John Boehner’s unwillingness to push it through, and so Obama is doing his best to work around this stall,
“Congress haven’t gotten it done… but I’m going to do what I can, with the authority that I have.”
“We’ve got a long way to go, but I hope [today] you are reminded of the extraordinary progress we have made. We are on the right side of history.”
