This year, HER is focusing on New Queers Resolutions and during this second week of January, our focus is fitness. Most of us in the LGBTQ+ community know that gyms can be a tough place, especially when you don’t follow traditional gender norms. Few gyms even have gender neutral bathrooms, and even less cater specifically to the queer community. Thankfully, more and more gyms are welcoming members of the LGBTQ+ community and here are a few of our favorites.
We can all only hope queer-focused gyms become a popular trend for years to come. The Queer Gym openly welcomes everyone of every sexuality, gender, age, etc. “The beginning of each class starts with an introduction where each member says their name, gender pronoun and answers an icebreaker question. We added the gender pronoun question after I realized it’s importance in our community.” When was the last time your gym class asked for your pronoun? You should recommend it next time to you talk to your local trainer.

Following its own name, the EVERYBODY Gym is built for every-body. On their home page it says, “We welcome all bodies, genders, races, nationalities, faiths, classes, sexualities, sizes, ages & abilities. We do not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia or oppression of any kind.”

Started by Kate Fitzpatrick, PinkFitz offers a wide variety of programs in fat loss, strength building, detoxing, habit creation, and lifestyle management. Not everyone has the benefit of having a trainer in the LGBTQ community who gets our own unique struggles, thoughts, and concerns. There’s even a program called “Make your Ex wish she wasn’t” which is the best program name of all time.

Based in Denver, Colorado, Gym Uptown opens their doors to everyone, especially members of the LGBT community. “We take huge steps in being proud to accept our LGBT brothers and sisters of the community by being the first and only major gym to actively fill the vacuum Denver and the rest of Colorado has long had by openly recognizing that slice of the community as much as the rest of our community. With Denver ranking among the top 8 most highly populated LGBT cities across America, isn’t it about time?”
